Sunflower Bouquet Surprise

One of my favorite things about crochet is that every project tells a story.
Sometimes that story begins with a customer. Sometimes it starts with a new pattern I've been itching to try. And sometimes... it starts with someone you love.
Today's project falls into that last category.
Technically, I probably should keep this one completely under wraps because it's meant to be a surprise. But I also know the odds of her stumbling across this blog before it's finished are pretty slim, so I'm taking my chances.
I have a sister from another mister.
Not by blood, but you know those friendships that become family? The kind where you've celebrated victories together, cried through the hard seasons, disagreed, forgiven, laughed until your stomach hurt, and somehow always found your way back to each other?
That's us.
Life has taken both of us down some unexpected roads over the years, but one thing has never changed. She's family.
Recently, she made a huge move in her life. The kind of move that takes courage, faith, and more than a little determination. I wanted to celebrate this new chapter with something handmade because those are always my favorite gifts to give.
Originally, I had something completely different planned.
Then, during one of our conversations, I realized what she would really love.
A sunflower bouquet.
Only... being me... I couldn't stop at a bouquet.
So I'm making her a Sunflower Bouquet Blanket.
It feels like the perfect gift. Sunflowers have a way of reminding us to keep reaching toward the light even after difficult seasons. They stand tall, bring warmth wherever they grow, and somehow manage to make people smile without saying a word.
That feels fitting.
The best part?
For once, I didn't have to make an emergency yarn run!
Every color I need was already tucked away in my yarn stash just waiting for the right project. I don't know about you, but there is something incredibly satisfying about "shopping" your own stash and finding exactly what you need.
It's almost like the blanket was meant to happen.
So that's what's currently on my hook.
I'm excited to watch this bouquet bloom one stitch at a time, and if all goes according to plan, she'll have no idea it's coming until it's wrapped around her shoulders.
Now I just have to hope she doesn't read my blog before I can gift it!

Every project starts with a single stitch, and today this one officially began.
I gathered the yarn from my stash and was pleasantly surprised to discover I already had every color I needed. It felt like this blanket was simply waiting for the right moment to come to life.
With the first stitches on my hook, I couldn't help but imagine the finished blanket and the smile I hope it brings. Right now, it's just the beginning, but every row brings me one step closer to a heartfelt gift made with love, friendship, and intention.
This is more than just another crochet projectāit's a story stitched one row at a time, and I'm so excited to watch this sunflower bouquet bloom.
June 26, 2026 ā¢ Shaping Up
Today I officially began the blanket itself!
The center is worked in the round, with rows of double crochet building around a beautiful dodecagon. There's something so elegant about the simplicity of the stitches. With every round, the shape becomes more defined, and it's finally starting to feel like a blanket instead of just a collection of yarn.
I also reached a fun milestone todayāI finished the very first skein of the soft tan yarn! There's always something satisfying about weaving in that last end, grabbing a fresh skein, and seeing just how much progress has been made.
It's still early in the journey, but I can already imagine the vibrant sunflower bouquet that will eventually bloom from this cozy foundation. One stitch, one round, and one skein at a time, this special gift is coming to life.

June 28, 2026 ā¢ Gettin heavy
I officially started the second skein today, and this project is beginning to feel real.
There's something magical about reaching the point where a crochet project stops looking like "just rows" and starts taking on the unmistakable illusion of a blanket. It's growing longer, feeling warmer in my lap, and becoming more comforting with every stitch.
The pattern is still wonderfully relaxing and repetitive, giving me plenty of time to simply enjoy the process. Sometimes it's nice to let your hands do the work while your mind wanders and your heart reflects on the person who will eventually wrap themselves in something made with so much love.
I'm excited to keep watching this sunflower surprise bloom. Every row brings me one step closer to creating a gift I hope will bring warmth, comfort, and a reminder that she's loved.

June 30, 2026 ā¢ Almost Through the Second Skein
Progress is happening!
I'm almost finished with the second skein of yarn, and it's so satisfying to see this blanket slowly growing with every stitching session.
I'll admit, this first section is a little repetitive. It's one of those projects where you settle into a rhythm, stitch after stitch, row after row. While it may seem a bit plain right now, I know it's laying the foundation for the beautiful sunflower bouquet that's waiting to bloom later in the pattern.
Sometimes crochet reminds us that not every stage is the most exciting, but every stage is important. The simple rows create the canvas that allows the stunning details to shine.
As I work, I can't help but imagine my friend opening this gift. Knowing who it's for makes every stitch feel meaningful, even during the repetitive parts.
For now, I'll keep enjoying the peaceful rhythm and watching this blanket grow one skein at a time. The flowers are coming, and I can't wait to share the next update with you!

What a difference a few days of stitching can make!
Skein #2 is officially complete, and I've already started working through Skein #3. Every round adds a little more size, and it's amazing to watch this project slowly transform into a real blanket.
One of my favorite parts of making blankets is something most people don't think aboutāyou get to experience their warmth long before they're finished. As I crochet, the blanket rests across my lap, wrapping me in the very comfort I'm creating for someone else. There's something incredibly cozy and rewarding about that.
With each stitch, I find myself imagining the day I can gift this blanket and see the surprise on her face. It's those thoughts that keep me eagerly picking up my hook for "just one more round."
I'm excited to finish this third skein because it means I'll be ready to move on to the next stage of the pattern. The journey is just as meaningful as the finished blanket, and I can't wait to see where the next stitches take me.

July 14, 2026 ā¢ The Sunflowers Are Beginning to Bloom
This project has officially reached the stage I have been waiting for!
Skein #3 is complete, the green edging is finished, and the leaves are done.
The blanket has changed so much with the addition of the green, and now it is finally time to begin bringing the sunflower bouquet to life.
I have decided to make 35 sunflowers for the blanket because she turned 35 this year. I love adding little bits of meaning to handmade gifts, and knowing that there will be one flower for every year makes this project feel even more special.
So far, I have 20 flower centers complete!
There is still plenty of work ahead of me. I need to finish the remaining centers, add all those beautiful petals, and then begin sewing each flower onto the blanket. But after watching the simple tan foundation grow one skein at a time, I am so excited to finally see the sunflowers begin to bloom.
The secret is getting closer to being finished, and I cannot wait to see all 35 flowers together!

July 18, 2026 ā¢ The Bouquet Is Blooming
This project has reached one of my favorite stages!
All 35 flower bases are officially complete, and the blanket is finally beginning to bloom. So far, 10 of the 35 sunflowers have their petals finished and have been sewn onto the blanket.
Seeing those first flowers attached completely changes the look of the project. What started as a cozy blanket foundation is now becoming the sunflower bouquet I imagined from the very beginning. Every flower I attach makes me pause for a moment just to admire how it's all coming together.
It's exciting to watch the vision in my head become something I can actually hold in my hands. I find myself laying the blanket out after every few flowers just to take it all in before picking my hook back up again.
There are still plenty of petals to crochet and flowers to attach, but the finish line is finally starting to come into view. I can't wait to see all 35 sunflowers in place.
