The Puff Stitch

How to Crochet the Puff Stitch

Learning the Puff Stitch is a fun way to add soft, raised texture to your crochet projects. This stitch is created by pulling up several loops in the same stitch and closing them together to form a fluffy little puff that sits right on top of your fabric. It may look complicated at first, but once you get comfortable keeping your loops even, the Puff Stitch becomes surprisingly simple and satisfying to make. Use it to add texture to blankets, scarves, hats, pillows, bags, and even amigurumi details.

Materials Needed

Your current project yarn: Any weight yarn can be used, though a smooth worsted weight yarn is a great choice while learning because it makes your loops easier to see.

A matching hook: Use the hook size recommended on your yarn label.

Tapestry needle and scissors: For weaving in your ends when your project is complete.

The Stitch Breakdown

Before beginning the Puff Stitch, you'll need to know a few basic stitches.

Chain (ch): Yarn over and pull through the loop on your hook.

Single Crochet (sc): Insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through both loops.

Puff Stitch: Yarn over, insert your hook into the specified stitch and pull up a loop. Repeat this several times in the same stitch, keeping your loops loose and even, until you have 9 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all of the loops on your hook, then chain 1 to secure the puff.

Foundation Chain

Chain an even number of stitches.

Work one single crochet into the second chain from your hook.

Continue working one single crochet into each chain across.

Turn your work.

Row 1: Creating the First Puffs

Chain 1.

Work one single crochet into the first stitch.

*Work one Puff Stitch into the next stitch.

Work one single crochet into the following stitch.*

Repeat from to across the row.

Finish with one single crochet in the final stitch.

Turn.

Row 2: Creating a Foundation Between Puffs

Chain 1.

Work one single crochet into each stitch across.

Turn your work.

This row creates a simple foundation between your textured Puff Stitch rows and allows each puff to stand out.

Row 3: Adding the Next Row of Puffs

Chain 1.

Work one single crochet into the first stitch.

*Work one Puff Stitch into the next stitch.

Work one single crochet into the following stitch.*

Repeat from to across the row.

Finish with one single crochet in the final stitch.

Turn.

Continue the Pattern

Continue alternating the Puff Stitch row with a row of single crochet until your project reaches the desired length.

You can also experiment with the placement of your puffs. Space them farther apart for subtle texture or place them closer together for a fuller, more dramatic effect.

Finding Your Rhythm

The biggest secret to a beautiful Puff Stitch is keeping the loops you pull up the same height.

Try not to tighten your yarn after each loop. Instead, gently pull each loop up to approximately the same height before inserting your hook back into the stitch.

This gives your puff enough room to become soft and rounded instead of tight and flat.

If you struggle to pull your hook through all of the loops at once, your tension may simply be a little too tight. Loosen those loops and try again.

Don't worry if your first few puffs aren't perfectly even. This is one of those stitches where your hands quickly learn the movement through practice.

Once you've found your rhythm, the Puff Stitch is a wonderful way to turn a simple crochet project into something full of texture and personality.

Happy crocheting!
