The Cloud Carry All Handbag

Scrap Yarn Blanket Yarn Handbag

Don't let those chunky blanket yarn leftovers sit forgotten in a basket.

In this design series, we're transforming bulky weight (6) blanket yarn scraps into a soft, sturdy handbag that's perfect for everyday use. Along the way, you'll learn techniques that make working with plush yarn easier, from creating a strong foundation to managing color changes and building handles that will stand up to regular use.

This isn't just about making a bag—it's about discovering how even the smallest scraps can become something beautiful and practical. I'll share my design process, the lessons I learn along the way, and plenty of tips to help you create a handbag that's uniquely your own.

So gather your blanket yarn scraps, your favorite hook, and a cozy drink. Let's turn that overflowing scrap basket into a handmade bag you'll be proud to carry.

The Project

Project Goal: A sturdy, plush handbag using bulky weight (6) blanket yarn scraps.

Lesson 1: Taming the Bulk (Materials & Prep)

Gather at least 150-200 yards of blanket yarn scraps.

Have fun with your color choices.

Lesson 2: The Sturdy Base (The Foundation)

Be sure to crochet over your "tails" as you go. With blanket yarn, weaving in ends later is bulky and messy; "carrying" the yarn makes it seamless.

Lesson 3: The "Scrappy" Fade (Color Transitions)

Since blanket yarn is so bold, I suggest a "Random Stripe" vs. a "Planned Block" look.

Be sure to visually balance heavy colors (like deep blues) with lighter scraps so the bag doesn't look bottom-heavy.

Lesson 4: Handles that Hold (The Finish)

Reinforce the handle attachment points so the plush yarn doesn't stretch out over time.
