Sometimes the quickest projects become the ones you reach for every day.
These plush velvet scrunchies are soft, stylish, and incredibly satisfying to make. They're a wonderful way to use up leftover velvet yarn while creating a hair accessory that's gentle on your hair and beautiful enough to wear every day.
Whether you're making one for yourself, filling a gift basket, or creating a whole collection in different colors, this project comes together quickly and delivers a big dose of handmade joy in very little time.
What You'll Need
Plush velvet yarn (Weight 5 or 6 works best)
6 mm (J) crochet hook (or the size that gives you a full, fluffy look)
Standard elastic hair tie (metal-free preferred)
Yarn needle
The Pattern
Step 1
Create a slip knot and join your yarn to the elastic hair tie with a slip stitch.
Step 2
Chain 1.
Work single crochets all the way around the elastic.
Pack the stitches closely together so the elastic is completely covered, even when stretched. The more stitches you work, the fuller your finished scrunchie will be.
Step 3
Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
Step 4
Chain 2 (counts as your first stitch).
Work 2–3 double crochets into every single crochet from the previous round.
As the stitches build, the fabric will naturally begin to ruffle into the classic scrunchie shape.
Step 5
Join with a slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain 2.
Finishing Up
Fasten off and weave in your ends securely.
Because velvet yarn can be slippery, weave the tail back and forth several times to help keep it securely in place.
Your scrunchie is ready to wear, gift, or tuck into a market display!
These are perfect for using leftover velvet yarn and make wonderful stocking stuffers, teacher gifts, party favors, or quick market makes. Once you make one, you'll likely find yourself making a whole collection in every color.
