Double Herringbone Stitch

How to Crochet the Double Herringbone Stitch

Learning the Double Herringbone Stitch is a great way to take a familiar double crochet and give it a beautiful twist. This stitch creates a smooth, slightly slanted texture that gives your fabric a subtle woven appearance without requiring a complicated stitch repeat. If you're comfortable with double crochet, you'll only need to change one small part of the stitch to create the herringbone effect. The finished fabric works beautifully for blankets, scarves, hats, garments, bags, and home décor projects.

Materials Needed

Your current project yarn: Any weight yarn will work, though a smooth worsted weight yarn is ideal for practicing and seeing the herringbone texture clearly.

A matching hook: Use the hook size recommended on your yarn label.

Tapestry needle and scissors: For weaving in your ends when your project is complete.

The Stitch Breakdown

Before beginning the Double Herringbone Stitch, you'll need to know a few basic crochet techniques.

Chain (ch): Yarn over and pull through the loop on your hook.

Double Crochet (dc): Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops. Yarn over again and pull through the remaining two loops.

Herringbone Double Crochet (HBDC): Yarn over and insert your hook into the specified stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop, then immediately pull that new loop through the first loop already on your hook. You should now have two loops remaining. Yarn over and pull through one loop, then yarn over and pull through the final two loops.

That little change at the beginning of the stitch is what creates the signature slanted herringbone appearance.

Repeat Row 2 until your project reaches the desired length.

As you add more rows, you'll begin to see the stitches gently lean across the fabric, creating the beautiful texture that gives the Herringbone Double Crochet its name.

Finding Your Rhythm

The key to the Double Herringbone Stitch is remembering that the beginning of the stitch is different from a traditional double crochet.

After pulling up your new loop, don't yarn over immediately. Instead, pull that new loop directly through the first loop already sitting on your hook. That small movement creates the herringbone effect.

Keeping your tension relaxed is also important. If your stitches are too tight, pulling the new loop through the first loop can become difficult. Give yourself a little extra room as you work until the motion begins to feel natural.

Once your hands learn that extra pull through, the Double Herringbone Stitch develops a wonderfully repetitive rhythm. It's an excellent stitch when you want something more interesting than traditional double crochet without committing to a complicated pattern repeat.

Happy crocheting!
