There is nothing like a physical book in your hands, and having a handmade bookmark to hold your place makes the reading experience feel just a little bit more special. These dainty bookmarks are a fantastic way to shop your shelves for those beautiful lace-weight or thin cotton scraps that are too small for a bigger project.
What You Need
Scraps of thin cotton project (Weight 2 or 3 works best for a flat finish)
3.5mm hook
Scissors
Yarn needle
The Pattern
We want this to stay flat so it doesn't bulk up your book and damage the spine.
Foundation: Chain 35 (or more if you are reading a tall hardcover).
Row 1: Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each of the next 2 chains. Chain 3, skip 2 chains, single crochet in the next 3 chains. Repeat from to until you reach the end. Turn.
Row 2: Chain 1. Single crochet in each of the 3 single crochets from the previous row. In the chain-3 space, work (2 double crochets, chain 2, 2 double crochets) to create a little shell. Repeat from to across.
The Finish: At the last stitch, fasten off leaving a long tail.
The Tassel
A bookmark isn't quite finished without a little flare peeking out from the top of the pages.
Cut four lengths of project about 6 inches long.
Fold them in half and loop them through the end of your bookmark.
Pull the ends through the loop to secure a tassel.
Trim the ends so they are nice and even.
Pro Tip
If you want your bookmark to be extra crisp, give it a quick "block." Just wet it slightly, pin it flat on a towel, and let it dry. It will make those little shells pop and keep it from curling up inside your book.
I love seeing these in soft pastels or even bright neons to match the vibe of the book.
