This coffee mug sleeve is like a tiny sweater for your morning brew, giving you all those cozy vibes while keeping your fingers safe from the heat. It is a quick win that uses just a bit of your stash, making it a perfect project for when you need a little creative reset.
What You Need
Medium weight cotton or acrylic yarn from your shelves
5mm hook
One 1 inch wooden button
Yarn needle
Measuring tape
The Pattern
This sleeve is worked in rows to create a nice texture that feels great in your hand.
Foundation: Chain 31. This fits most standard mugs, but you can add or subtract chains to fit your favorite one. Just make sure your chain wraps around the mug with about an inch gap for the button closure.
Row 1: Single crochet in the second chain from your hook and in each chain across. Chain 1 and turn. (30 stitches)
Row 2: Working in the back loops only, half double crochet in each stitch across. This creates those classic ridges that look so sharp. Chain 1 and turn.
Row 3 to Row 8: Repeat Row 2 until your project is about 3 inches tall. You want it high enough to cover the main part of the mug without getting in the way of your sipping.
The Button Loop: On your last row, do not fasten off. Chain 10, then slip stitch back into the last stitch of the row to create a loop. Test it against your button to make sure it slides over easily but stays secure.
Finishing Up
Fasten off and leave a long tail. Use your yarn needle to weave in your ends so they disappear. Set your sleeve around your mug to mark exactly where that button needs to go on the opposite side of the loop. Sew the button on tight.
Slide it on, pour something warm, and enjoy that peace over perfection feeling.
