When a Custom Order Comes With Complete Creative Freedom
Some custom orders arrive with reference pictures, specific colors, measurements, and a very clear vision of what someone wants.
And then there are the orders that basically say:
“It's for a baby girl. You decide the rest.”
Those are exciting.
And maybe just a tiny bit intimidating. 😂
For this baby blanket, there was no theme.
No requested color palette.
No particular stitch.
Just a baby girl who needed a cozy handmade blanket and complete creative freedom to make it happen.
There’s Usually a Why Behind the What
A baby blanket is one of those gifts that can become part of so many little moments.
Tummy time.
Snuggles on the couch.
Stroller rides.
A cozy layer on chilly mornings.
And eventually, it may become one of those things tucked away with all the other pieces of babyhood that are just too special to let go.
So even without a specific theme or color request, I wanted this blanket to feel special.
The only question was...
What exactly was it going to look like?
At the beginning, I didn't really know either.
From a Pile of Yarn to a Plan
Usually, I have at least a general color palette in mind before I begin a project.
Not this time.
I started gathering skeins of anti pilling 4 ply yarn and seeing what spoke to me.
One color joined another.
Then another looked like it belonged with those.
And somehow, without sitting down and carefully planning an entire palette beforehand, the colors just started coming together.
Sometimes that's how creativity works.
You don't always need the whole picture before you start.
Sometimes you just choose the first thing that feels right and let the project tell you what it needs next.
Once I had the colors coming together, I decided to work the blanket in stripes using the sedge stitch.
And suddenly, I had a plan.
The Smallest Details Often Become the Biggest Ones
The sedge stitch was such a fun choice for this blanket because it gave all those stripes a beautiful texture without taking away from the colors.
Instead of a completely flat surface, the stitch added dimension and visual interest throughout the blanket.
And with each new stripe, I got to see the color palette develop a little more.
There was no inspiration photo I was trying to match.
No exact finished blanket I was trying to recreate.
I was simply choosing what felt right as I went.
And there's something really freeing about creating that way.
Every Custom Order Has a Story
This blanket started with almost nothing.
Baby girl. Blanket.
That was pretty much the entire creative brief. 😂
From there, I got to choose the yarn, gather the colors, settle on the sedge stitch, build the stripes, and watch an idea that didn't exist yet slowly appear on my hook.
That's one of the reasons I love custom work.
Sometimes my job is to take the picture someone already has in their head and figure out how to recreate it.
But sometimes someone trusts me enough to say:
“You create it.”
And then I get to see where the yarn takes me.
This time, it became a soft, striped, textured baby blanket made especially for one little girl.
