From TikTok to the Hook: Two Jimothy Raccoons

If Jimothy has made his way onto your feed, you probably already understand.

There is just something about that sweet raccoon face and his wonderfully awkward little personality that has captured people's attention.

And when an internet favorite becomes an inside joke or something you constantly send back and forth with friends, it starts becoming part of the friendship itself.

That is what made this order so much fun.

These weren't simply two raccoon plushies.

They were gifts inspired by something her friends already loved.

Of course, recreating Jimothy meant capturing more than the fact that he was a raccoon.

He needed that Jimothy look.

For this one, I turned to a pattern by Shiny Lunchbox Studio, which gave me the perfect foundation for bringing this viral little guy off the screen and onto my hook.

But Jimothy also brought something completely new to my crochet journey.

Felting.

I had never felted with crochet before, and this project gave me the perfect opportunity to try it. There is always a little bit of nervousness when I introduce a technique I haven't used before—especially on a custom order—but I also love when a project pushes me to learn something new.

The felting helped create the fuzzy, textured look that made these little raccoons feel even more like Jimothy instead of simply looking like crocheted raccoons.

From there, all of those recognizable features started coming together.

The little ears.

The masked face.

The paws.

The striped tail.

And, most importantly, that adorable expression that makes you want to pick him up even though the real-life version would probably be making questionable decisions near your trash cans.

Watching the crochet and felting come together was one of my favorite parts of this project. What started as a technique I had never tried before became part of what gave these two their personality.

And before long, not one but two little Jimothys were taking over my workspace.

One Jimothy would have been adorable.

Two Jimothys?

That was a whole different level of cute.

Because these were being created for two friends, I loved seeing them sitting together as the order came to life.

Each was handmade individually, which means, as with any handmade plushie... they had their own tiny differences and personality.

They matched.

But they were still uniquely their own.

And somehow, that felt pretty perfect for gifts between friends.

Trends come and go.

Videos disappear down our feeds.

But sometimes something silly makes us laugh so much that it becomes connected to a particular person or season of our lives.

That is what I love about an order like this.

A viral TikTok raccoon became an idea.

That idea became two handmade plushies.

And those plushies became gifts for friends who would immediately understand exactly why they were receiving them.

No explanation necessary.

Just:

JIMOTHY.

And really, sometimes that is the entire story.

One of my favorite things about custom crochet is that your idea does not have to be traditional.

It can be sentimental.

It can be completely unique.

It can be an inside joke.

And yes, it can absolutely be the adorable raccoon you and your friends have become obsessed with on TikTok.
