From Gaming Skin to Crochet: Bringing His Character to Life

My starting point was his gaming skin.

When I recreate something from an inspiration picture, I spend time looking beyond the character as a whole and breaking it down into individual pieces.

What shape is the head?

What colors make the character recognizable?

What clothing and accessories are important?

Which tiny details would immediately make him look at the finished plush and know, “That's mine.”

With a gaming skin, those details matter even more.

Players choose and customize their skins as a way to represent themselves inside the games they love. So I wasn't simply recreating another gaming character.

I was recreating his.

Like most of my custom creations, this character started as nothing more than yarn.

I began with the basic shapes and worked my way through the body, constantly comparing my progress to the inspiration image.

Little by little, the familiar character began appearing.

The body took shape.

The colors started coming together.

Then came the features that made his skin different from any other character I could have created.

This is one of my favorite parts of working from a picture.

There is always that point somewhere in the process when a collection of crocheted shapes suddenly becomes recognizable.

You look at the inspiration.

You look at the yarn version.

And think...

There you are.

Once the main character was complete, it was time to concentrate on those finishing details.

With custom character work, I have learned that sometimes the smallest feature can be the most important one.

His eye size.

A cute little booty.

How long his arms are.

His feet.

Something that might seem insignificant to someone unfamiliar with the character can be exactly what makes the person receiving it light up.

So I kept working from his gaming skin, adding the details that would make this plushie feel like his character rather than simply a generic gamer.

Crochet gave us a way to change that.

His digital character became yarn.

The yarn became individual shapes.

Those shapes became a plushie.

And suddenly, the gaming skin he was used to seeing on a screen was sitting right there in the real world.

Orders like this are one of the reasons I love having a Custom Order Gallery.

They show just how different one person's idea can be from the next.

A custom creation doesn't have to be a traditional stuffed animal or a well-known character.

It can be something completely personal to you.

Even your gaming skin.

You don't have to know how it would translate into crochet. You don't need to find a pattern for it first.

Sometimes you just have to send me the picture and ask the question:

“Can you make this?”

Then I get to figure out the rest.

Maybe it is your gaming skin.

Your favorite character.

An avatar you designed yourself.

Or something completely different that only your fellow gamers would immediately recognize.

Those unusual, personal ideas are exactly what make custom orders so much fun.

Because there is something pretty incredible about taking something that has only ever existed on a screen and finally being able to hold it in your hands.
