Bringing My Pet Dragon to Life

Some custom orders begin with something someone sees and loves.

Others begin with a memory.

This one began with an imaginary friend named My Pet Dragon.

When James was little, My Pet Dragon was part of his world. He was a very specific dragon too.

He was red and green. ❤️💚

And whenever James saw a dragon at the store, he would ask for a red and green one.

Years later, James may not remember the imaginary friend who started it all, but his mom does.

And that's where this custom order began.

There’s Usually a Why Behind the What

When his mom shared the story with me, this wasn't going to be just another crochet dragon.

She told me:

“My son had an imaginary friend whose name was My Pet Dragon. He was red and green. James always asked for a red and green dragon every time we went to the store.”

There wasn't an old photograph of My Pet Dragon to copy.

There couldn't be.

He had existed in the imagination of a little boy.

But we did have the most important details.

A dragon. Red and green. And a whole lot of childhood memories attached to him.

That was enough to start.

From His Imagination to My Hook

This is one of those custom orders that reminds me why I love creating things that can't simply be picked off a shelf.

My job wasn't to perfectly recreate My Pet Dragon.

It was to take the pieces of him that Mom remembered and create

something that could represent that little piece of James's childhood.

So, stitch by stitch, a red and green dragon began to take shape.

There was something especially sweet about knowing the story while I worked.

James might not remember asking for that red and green dragon anymore, but his mom remembers the little boy who did.

Now a piece of that memory exists somewhere outside of her own mind.

She can actually hold it.

The Smallest Details Often Become the Biggest Ones

The colors were probably the most important detail of this entire order.

To anyone else, red and green might simply be a fun color combination for a dragon.

For this family, they meant My Pet Dragon.

That's what I find so special about custom work.

A color can hold a memory.

A stuffed animal can represent an imaginary childhood friend.

And something made from yarn can unexpectedly become a connection to a season of life that has already passed.

James doesn't remember My Pet Dragon anymore.

But when his new dragon arrived, Mom told me something that made this story even better:

“He loves that dragon!”

Maybe he doesn't remember the imaginary friend who inspired it.

He doesn't have to.

Now he has a new red and green dragon to love. ❤️💚

Every Custom Order Has a Story

I think there's something beautiful about the way this one came full circle.

A little boy once imagined a red and green friend named My Pet Dragon.

His mom remembered.

Years later, she trusted me with that memory and asked me to turn it into something real.

And now James has the red and green dragon he spent all that time asking for.

Not because he remembers My Pet Dragon.

But because his mom remembered for him.

And sometimes, that's what makes a handmade gift so special.

If you could bring one piece of your child's imagination to life, what would it be?
