A Rainbow Baby Blanket Made With a Little Extra Love

The term rainbow baby carries so much meaning for the families who use it.

This wasn't simply going to be another baby blanket.

It was being made for a deeply loved little girl, and I wanted the finished piece to feel worthy of the story behind it.

But sometimes life doesn't cooperate with our plans.

When her mama's circumstances changed, completing the order was no longer something she could do.

I understood.

At the same time, I had this blanket on my heart.

I knew who it was meant for.

And I really wanted to find a way to get it to her.

This is the part of the story that still means so much to me.

I shared what was happening with my community, and people rallied around this mama and her little girl.

Together, they helped cover the cost of the materials and shipping so I could continue making the blanket and send it where it was always supposed to go.

People who didn't know this family personally decided to help anyway.

Not because they were getting anything in return.

Simply because they had an opportunity to do something kind.

And suddenly, this blanket carried a little bit of love from a whole group of people.

That's something yarn alone could never create.

Once everything was taken care of, I could focus on what I knew how to do.

Make the blanket.

Stitch by stitch, it came together for this little girl.

There was something different about working on it after everything that had happened.

I wasn't just thinking about the customer who had originally placed the order anymore.

I was thinking about all the people who had helped make sure I could finish it.

Every row brought it a little closer to becoming what it was always supposed to be:

Then came one of my favorite parts of any custom order.

After the unexpected turns, the hard times, the people who stepped forward, and all those stitches, her baby's blanket was finally becoming a reality.

This blanket began as a custom order.

But it became something much bigger.

It became a reminder of what can happen when people decide to show up for someone else.

A mama going through a difficult season still got to receive the blanket she had chosen for her rainbow baby.

I still got to make something beautiful for that little girl.

And my community got to put a little bit of their own love into the story by helping me get it finished and shipped.

One person couldn't make everything easier for this family.

But a group of people could come together and make one thing a little easier.

And sometimes, that's enough to remind us how much a small act of kindness can matter.

But tucked between those stitches was something you can't buy by the skein:
