A Coneflower That Never Stops Blooming
Not every custom order has to be a plushie, blanket, or wearable.
Sometimes someone comes to me with an idea that makes me think, Oh, this is going to be fun.
This time?
It was a crochet potted coneflower. šøšŖ“
A little handmade flower that could sit on a shelf, brighten up a desk, or add a touch of color to a room without ever needing water.
And, of course, I was ready to see if I could bring it to life with yarn.
Thereās Usually a Why Behind the What
One of my favorite things about custom orders is that I never really know what someone is going to ask me to make next.
That's part of the fun!
When this customer asked if I could create a potted coneflower, it wasn't something I had sitting in my shop waiting to be ordered.
It started with her idea.
And that's exactly what my custom order calendar is for.
You don't have to find something I've already made. Sometimes you can simply come to me and say, āCould you make this?ā
Then we figure out how to turn that idea into something made from yarn.
From Her Idea to My Hook
Real coneflowers have such a distinctive look, so I wanted the crochet version to capture what makes them recognizable while still having that soft, whimsical handmade feel.
That meant thinking beyond just crocheting a flower.
I had to consider the shape of the petals, that signature raised center, the stem and leaves, and how everything would come together inside its little crochet pot.
Piece by piece, it started looking less like a collection of yarn and more like a tiny potted plant.
Except this one wouldn't wilt.
And even I couldn't accidentally forget to water it. š
The Smallest Details Often Become the Biggest Ones
Flowers are one of those things where the little details make such a difference.
The texture in the center.
The way the petals sit around it.
The shape of the leaves.
The way the flower stands above the pot.
Those details are what take a crochet flower from simply being cute to actually making you think, That's a coneflower!
And figuring out how to create those details with my hook is one of the parts of custom work I enjoy most.
It's a little bit of experimenting, a little bit of problem solving, and usually quite a bit of unraveling and trying again until the idea in my head starts appearing in my hands.
Every Custom Order Has a Story
Sometimes the story behind a custom order is sentimental.
Sometimes it's recreating a beloved pet or bringing a childhood memory to life.
And sometimes the story begins with someone having a really fun idea and trusting me enough to say:
āCan you crochet this for me?ā
This time, the answer became a little potted coneflower. šø
It won't need sunshine.
It won't need watering.
And it won't stop blooming when summer ends.
It just gets to sit there looking pretty, reminding me once again that some of my favorite creations begin with something I never would have thought to make until a customer asked.
