Self paced learning • Guided activities • Creative exploration
Learning your basic stitches is an exciting accomplishment.
But knowing how to make a single crochet stitch and knowing how to confidently approach an unfamiliar project are two very different things.
You might recognize the stitches in a pattern but still struggle to understand how they work together.
You might want to make a blanket but feel overwhelmed choosing a stitch, determining the size, or figuring out how much yarn you'll need.
Or perhaps amigurumi and wearables have caught your attention, but you're unsure where to begin.
That's exactly why I created Beyond the Basics.
This course isn't about rushing you into complicated techniques.
It's about helping you connect the skills you already have with the projects you're excited to explore.
You'll learn to approach new challenges with curiosity, develop practical problem solving skills, and begin making creative decisions with greater confidence.
Because becoming a stronger crocheter isn't just about learning more stitches.
Six Learning Modules. Three Creative Pathways. Countless Possibilities.
Beyond the Basics is organized into six thoughtfully developed modules that guide you from foundational skill development into practical project exploration.
Each module includes nine lessons, with activities and helpful resources designed to encourage understanding, practice, and creative independence.
Learn to Understand the Instructions Behind the Stitches
Crochet patterns can sometimes feel like they're written in another language.
This module helps you become more comfortable interpreting written instructions and understanding how patterns communicate construction.
You'll explore:
Crochet abbreviations and terminology
Understanding pattern instructions
Recognizing repeats and stitch sequences
Following more detailed patterns
Identifying important pattern information
Building confidence when instructions become confusing
Your Goal: Approach unfamiliar crochet patterns with greater understanding and less hesitation.
Explore New Stitches and Discover Your Creative Preferences
There are so many beautiful crochet stitches beyond the foundational techniques you've already learned.
This module encourages you to experiment, observe, and discover how different stitches create texture, movement, and visual interest.
You'll explore:
New stitch combinations
Texture and stitch structure
Creating and evaluating stitch samples
Understanding how yarn affects stitch appearance
Recording your discoveries
Developing your personal stitch reference collection
Through your Stitch Discovery Journal, you'll begin creating a resource you can return to throughout your crochet journey.
Your Goal: Build a stronger understanding of stitch possibilities and discover techniques that inspire you.
Three Project Experiences Designed to Help You Grow
Once you've strengthened your pattern reading skills and explored new stitches, it's time to put that knowledge into practice.
The remaining modules introduce three different types of crochet projects.
Each pathway offers a unique opportunity to develop skills, understand construction, and explore your creativity.
You can begin with the pathway that interests you most and return to explore the others as your confidence grows.
From Choosing Your Yarn to Finishing Your Creation
Blankets can be beautiful, meaningful projects, but they also require planning and thoughtful decisions.
This pathway helps you understand the process of creating a blanket rather than simply following a row by row pattern.
You'll explore:
Choosing an appropriate blanket project
Understanding size and construction
Selecting yarn and stitches
Planning your project
Maintaining consistency
Recognizing and correcting common issues
Finishing your blanket with confidence
Your Goal: Develop the knowledge and confidence to plan and complete a blanket project.
Bring Your Crochet Creations to Life

Working with shapes and rounds
Recognizing increases and decreases in shaping
Reading amigurumi patterns
Understanding stuffing and assembly
Exploring finishing details
Bringing personality into your creations
Your Goal: Develop the foundational knowledge to approach beginner amigurumi projects with confidence.
Discover the Possibilities of Crochet You Can Wear
Creating something you can wear introduces exciting new considerations.
Suddenly, stitch choice, measurements, fit, and construction all become part of the process.
This pathway helps you understand how wearable projects come together.
You'll explore:
Choosing an appropriate first wearable
Understanding measurements and sizing
Exploring garment construction
Recognizing the importance of gauge
Selecting suitable yarn and stitches
Understanding shaping and fit
Finishing wearable projects
Your Goal: Build the confidence to approach your first wearable project with a better understanding of how it should fit and function.
Trust Your Skills. Explore Your Creativity.
The final module brings together everything you've explored throughout the course.
You'll reflect on your progress, recognize your growing abilities, and begin looking toward the next stage of your crochet journey.
You'll explore:
Recognizing your strengths
Identifying areas for continued practice
Developing independent problem solving skills
Making thoughtful creative decisions
Building confidence with unfamiliar projects
Setting future crochet goals
Preparing for intermediate crochet
Your Goal: Move forward with greater independence, curiosity, and confidence in your creative abilities.

Brand New to Crochet?
If you're still learning how to hold your hook, create chains, or work basic stitches, I recommend beginning with my free Beginner Crochet 101 course.
It will help you build the foundation you'll need before exploring Beyond the Basics.
Your Hook. Your Pace. Your Possibilities.
You don't need hours of uninterrupted time to make progress.
Work through a lesson when you have a quiet afternoon or a few minutes between everyday responsibilities.
Pause to practice.
Repeat a technique.
Set a project down and come back to it.
There's no pressure to keep up with anyone else.
Your crochet journey belongs to you.
A Note About the Lesson Format
I believe it's important for you to know exactly what you're receiving.
Beyond the Basics is primarily a written learning experience featuring structured lessons, activities, and printable resources.
It is not currently a complete video based course.
Many lessons have limited photographs, and some include AI generated reference images.
I'm continuing to develop additional photographs, demonstrations, and visual guidance to make the learning experience even more helpful.
The course is designed to encourage hands on practice, thoughtful exploration, and independent skill development.
If you enjoy learning through written instruction, practical exercises, and guided projects, this course may be a wonderful fit.
Learning Is Even Better When We Encourage One Another
Crochet can be a peaceful solo activity, but that doesn't mean you have to figure everything out alone.
You're invited to become part of The Hook Hangout, our Naturally, MelissaMade crochet community.
It's a welcoming place to:
Share your projects and progress
Ask questions
Celebrate your little victories
Connect with other crocheters
Explore creative challenges
Find encouragement when a project gets frustrating
Whether you're celebrating a finished project or wondering why your stitch count suddenly changed, there's room for you.
Your first attempt, your little victories, and your "does this look right?" moments are all welcome.
When I created Beyond the Basics, I wasn't trying to build another course filled with complicated techniques just for the sake of making things harder.
I wanted to create something that helps crocheters become more comfortable with what they already know while discovering what they're capable of learning next.
Because I've seen how easily someone can convince themselves that a project is too difficult before they've even tried.
And I've also seen the excitement when something finally clicks.
When a pattern begins to make sense.
When a new stitch turns out beautifully.
When someone finishes a project they once thought was beyond their abilities.
Those moments matter.
My hope is that this course gives you the encouragement, resources, and creative freedom to experience more of them.
You don't have to know everything.
You just have to be willing to try something new.
