Some custom orders begin with a pattern.
Some begin with a color.
And some begin because a return customer finds UV reactive yarn online and immediately thinks, “I know exactly who needs something made with this!”
This customer had already trusted me with several custom creations when she came back with another wonderfully unique idea.
She had spotted UV reactive yarn and thought it could become the perfect lightweight scarf for her sister in law.
And once she explained why, the idea became even better.
She told me:
“Yep. My sister in law has black lights for her mineral collection, so I thought it would be a neat gift.”
Okay...now THAT is a personalized gift!
Usually a custom order begins with someone knowing what they want me to make, and then we figure out the materials.
This time, we did things a little differently.
The yarn came first.
We already knew we wanted something that would show off those UV reactive colors, so the next step was figuring out what to turn it into.

Since this was going to be a gift, we wanted something useful, wearable and lightweight enough that the yarn itself could really be the star.
After looking at our options, we landed on the beautiful Seabreeze Scarf by Lana.

The lightweight, open design was exactly what we were looking for. It gave us a beautiful scarf without overwhelming the thing that had inspired this entire project in the first place:
That yarn!
Pattern chosen.
Yarn ordered.
Now we just had to wait for it to arrive.
Once the yarn arrived, the fun began.
And I'll admit it:
This yarn was SO cool!
I started working the Seabreeze Scarf and loved watching all those colors come together.
There was just one problem.
As the scarf began to grow, I realized it was turning out far too wide for the casual, lightweight scarf we had envisioned.
Sometimes you can follow a plan perfectly and still realize that what is developing on your hook isn't quite right for the person or purpose you're making it for.
And that's when you frog it and try again!
I pulled it back and reworked the scarf so the finished width would be better suited for an easy, casual accessory.
Problem solved.
Or so I thought.
Because then...
I ran out of yarn.

Apparently this particular scarf wasn't going to let me off quite that easily!
More of that fabulous UV reactive yarn had to be ordered, which meant putting the scarf on hold until reinforcements arrived.
Custom work doesn't always follow a perfectly straight line from idea to finished piece. Sometimes there is frogging. Sometimes there's recalculating.
And sometimes there's an unexpected yarn order somewhere in the middle.
The important part is making the adjustments needed to get the finished piece right.
Once the additional yarn arrived, I could finally finish bringing our idea together.
There is something fun about working with an unusual yarn anyway, but knowing that this scarf would take on an entirely different look under black lights made the project even more interesting.
As the stitches built into the newly adjusted Seabreeze Scarf, I got to watch those colors work their way through the open design and create something beautiful even before the black light entered the picture.
But under UV light?
That was where the real fun began.
What could have simply been a pretty lightweight scarf now had this unexpected little surprise built right into it.
And knowing her sister in law already had black lights set up for her mineral collection made it even better.
This is one of the things I love most about custom orders.
Her sister in law has a mineral collection.
She uses black lights to enjoy that collection.
My customer happened to see UV reactive yarn.
And suddenly those seemingly unrelated little details became an idea for a handmade gift created specifically with her in mind.
That's what makes a custom gift different.
It doesn't always have to have someone's name on it or be made in their favorite color to be personal.
Sometimes personalization is simply knowing someone well enough to see something unusual and immediately think:
“She would love that.”
Maybe it isn't UV reactive yarn.
Maybe it's an unusual colorway, a character, an animal, a texture, a pattern or even a random picture you found while scrolling online.
If you see something and immediately think of someone you love, don't dismiss the idea just because you aren't sure what it could become.
Send it to me.
That's part of what makes the custom order process so much fun.
You bring me the inspiration, and together we can figure out what it wants to become.
And if the first attempt doesn't work quite the way we envisioned? We adjust, frog, reorder or rethink until we get there.
Because sometimes the perfect handmade gift doesn't start with:
“I want a scarf.”
Sometimes it starts with:
“Look at this yarn!”
Every piece in my Custom Order Gallery started with someone's idea, memory, inspiration photo, favorite character, special person or, in this case, a really cool skein of yarn.
Take a look around the gallery and imagine what we could create from your idea.
You don't need a pattern picked out or every detail figured out. Bring me your “What if...?”, your “I saw this and thought of...,” or your “Do you think you could make...?”
Those are usually where the best custom order stories begin.
And maybe the next story added to this gallery will be yours.
