Twice the Color, Twice the Fun: A Custom Set of Hot Pads

Not every custom order is glamorous, elaborate, or designed to sit on a shelf looking pretty.

Sometimes, a custom order is meant to be used every day. That does not mean it cannot still be fun, colorful, and made especially for the person receiving it.

This order was for a set of handmade crochet hot pads. The biggest challenge was not choosing the pattern or deciding how many to make. It was choosing the colors!

After I sent her the color options that were available, she narrowed her favorites down to two colorways but could not decide between them. She wondered if it would look good to make one hot pad in each colorway or if there was some way to make them half and half.

Instead of making her choose, I found a way to give her both.

Each hot pad was made double sided, with one colorway on each side. Rather than having two different hot pads in the set, both hot pads coordinate perfectly and can be flipped to display whichever look she feels like using that day.

One side can match one mood, season, or kitchen style, while the other gives her something completely different. It was a simple solution that made this practical order feel much more personal.

Hot pads may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you imagine an exciting custom crochet order, but I had so much fun figuring out how to bring both of her color choices together.

That is one of the things I love about custom work. Even the most practical household item can become something unique when the colors, details, and design are chosen with a particular person in mind.

These hot pads were made to be useful, but they were also made to bring a little handmade personality into an everyday space.

Some days call for one color combination. Other days call for something different.

With this double sided set, she never has to settle on just one look. She can simply flip them over whenever the mood strikes and enjoy both of the colorways she loved.

Not every order has to be glamorous to have a story. Sometimes the best custom creations are the ones that make ordinary moments a little more colorful, useful, and fun.
