Made Just for You

The Stories Behind My Custom Crochet Orders

Some of my favorite projects start with a message that says:

“Okay, I have an idea…”

Sometimes it's followed by a picture. Sometimes it's a favorite character, a meaningful color combination, or a gift idea for someone special.

And sometimes it's simply:

“This might sound a little crazy, but do you think you could make this?”

Those might actually be my favorite ones.

Because one of the things I love most about crochet is taking an idea that exists in someone's head and figuring out how to bring it to life with yarn.

It Starts With Your Story

Every custom order that comes across my hook has a reason behind it.

Sometimes it's sentimental. A blanket celebrating a milestone, a gift for a new baby, or something created specifically for someone you love.

Sometimes it's just plain fun. A favorite character, an inside joke, or even an internet famous raccoon that absolutely needs to become a crochet plushie.

Whatever the reason, there's a story there.

And that story becomes part of the project.

When I'm working on a custom order, I'm not simply thinking about making a blanket, plushie, wearable, or keepsake. I'm thinking about the person who will eventually receive it.

What details matter to them?

What will make them recognize it immediately?

What will make them smile when they open that package?

Those little things are what turn yarn into something personal.

Then It Comes to My Hook

This is where your story becomes part of mine.

Yarn gets pulled.

Colors get compared.

Ideas get sketched out in my head.

Patterns might be adjusted, combined, or created completely from scratch.

And yes, occasionally something gets made, stared at for entirely too long, and then frogged because it just isn't right.

That's part of handmade.

Custom crochet isn't an assembly line, and I don't want it to be.

Each project presents its own little challenges, decisions, and “How in the world am I going to crochet that?” moments.

But that's also what makes custom work so much fun.

Slowly, stitch by stitch, something that started as a conversation begins to look like the thing you imagined.

Some Pretty Memorable Things Have Crossed My Hook

Over the years, I've been trusted with some incredibly fun and meaningful ideas.

I've created a sunflower bouquet blanket made with 35 individual flowers, each one contributing to a very special finished piece.

I've turned Jimothy, a viral real life raccoon, into a cuddly crochet version of himself.

I've created a fun little plush inspired by the Adipose from Doctor Who.

There have been blankets, wearables, characters, gifts, and plenty of projects that didn't fit neatly into any category at all.

But when I look back at them, I don't just remember what I made.

I remember why I made it.

And I realized those stories deserved more than one finished photo.

So I'm Giving Them a Home

That's how the Custom Order Gallery came to be.

I wanted somewhere I could share more than a quick picture of a finished project before moving on to whatever was next on my hook.

I want to tell you the story.

In the Custom Order Gallery, you'll get to meet some of the creations that have come across my hook and learn a little more about what happened before that final photo.

You'll find the inspiration behind the order, the customer's story when they're comfortable sharing it, my side of the creative process, possibly photos from along the way, and, of course, the finished creation.

Because sometimes the journey from “Do you think you can make this?” to “It's finished!” is half the fun.

Maybe You'll Find a Little Inspiration Here, Too

Part of the reason I'm sharing these stories is because I know coming up with a custom order can feel intimidating.

You might think you need to know exactly what you want before contacting a maker.

You don't.

Some of the best projects start with nothing more than an idea.

You can show me a picture.

Tell me about a person.

Give me a few colors.

Describe a character.

Tell me the story behind the gift you're trying to create.

Or send me a message that starts with:

“Okay, hear me out…”

We can go from there.

Welcome to the Custom Order Gallery

This little corner of Naturally, MelissaMade is where I'm going to celebrate the stories behind the stitches.

Some will be sweet.

Some will be sentimental.

Some will probably be a little weird.

And knowing the kinds of things that end up on my hook, I'm sure a few will make us laugh.

But every one of them will have something in common.

They started with someone's idea and became something that couldn't simply be picked up from a store.

They were created for a particular person, memory, moment, or reason.

They were made just for you.

What would you love to see brought to life with yarn?
