Some custom orders come with weeks of planning.
Some start with a picture, an idea, and plenty of time to figure out all the little details.
And then there are the ones that begin with a message like this:
“I know this is a long shot but could he be done by the book signing tomorrow at 12:00?”
Challenge accepted.
A local author reached out to me with a pretty special request. She had a book signing coming up and wanted to know if I could bring one of her characters to life as a handmade crochet plushie.
His name?
Rook.
And Rook isn't just any character.
Rook, he's a Book.
Which meant I wasn't simply making a character inspired by a story. I was taking this little book shaped personality from the page and figuring out how to turn him into something she could actually hold, display, and take along to meet his readers.
There was just one little catch.
The book signing was the very next day at noon.
With such a short turnaround, there wasn't time to order special yarn or spend days comparing every possible shade.
We had to work with what I could get my hands on right then.
That limited our yarn and color choices a little, but sometimes limitations actually make the creative process more interesting.
We looked at the options, landed on colors that felt right for Rook, and I got to work.
There wasn't much time for second guessing.

I started at the bottom with his boots and legs.
Little by little, I worked my way upward until those legs began disappearing into the part that really makes Rook who he is: his book shaped body.
As I work on custom orders, I love sharing progress pictures whenever I can. It gives the customer a chance to watch their idea slowly become something real.
When I sent one of Rook's progress updates, her response told me we were definitely headed in the right direction:
“Omg! He is going to be amazing!!! 💜 Perfect colors!!”
That is one of my favorite parts of custom work.
There is this moment when the customer can suddenly see it.
It's no longer just an idea we talked about.
Their character, memory, gift, or vision is actually taking shape in yarn.

I kept crocheting that night.
Piece by piece, stitch by stitch, Rook went from boots and legs to a complete little character ready for his very first public appearance.
And somehow, despite the incredibly short timeline...
Rook was finished in time for the book signing.
From a “this might be a long shot” message to a finished character ready to meet readers the very next day.
But, of course, I needed to know what happened next.

So... How Did the Book Signing Go?
Afterward, I checked in to see how everything went.
Her response made that late night crochet session completely worth it:
“It was really great. Better than expected. Everyone loved Rook the plushie. 💜🎉💜🎉💜”
And THAT is why I love custom orders.
Rook wasn't created just to sit on a shelf.
He became part of the author's book signing. Readers got to see a character from the story step right off the page and into the real world.
For one afternoon, Rook wasn't only a character in a book.
Rook was there.
I can't promise that every custom order can be completed overnight. In fact, most custom projects need considerably more time so I can plan, gather materials, and give all those little details the attention they deserve.
But I absolutely love when someone comes to me with an unusual idea and asks:
“Do you think you could make this?”
A character from your book.
Something your child imagined.
A favorite memory.
A meaningful gift.
Or something so oddly specific that you aren't even sure where to begin looking for it.
Those are exactly the kinds of projects that make my Custom Order Gallery so much fun.
Because sometimes all it takes is an idea, a little creative problem solving, and a whole lot of yarn to turn something that existed only on a page into something you can hold in your hands.

Of course, Rook's adventure doesn't end with his plushie!
If you'd like to meet the character who inspired this custom creation, you can find Rook's book on Amazon.
Amazon describes this charming story as one that not only sparks children's imaginations, but encourages them to read more, discover new worlds, and create adventures of their own through the magic of reading.
I think that's what makes this custom order even more special. I got to take a character created to encourage a love of books and reading and bring him right off the page and into the author's hands. 💜📚

And if you're looking through it thinking, “Okay, but mine is a little unusual...”
Good.
Those are some of my favorites.
Your idea doesn't have to be perfectly figured out before you reach out. Bring me the story, the inspiration, the picture, or even the “I don't know if this is possible, but...”
We'll start there.
Every custom order has a story. Yours could be next.
