A Vision in Pink: Bringing a Beautiful Octopus to Life

Sometimes a custom order begins with an idea someone has been carrying around for a while. Other times, it begins with a photo and a simple question:

“Can you make something like this?”

This customer had found a beautiful crochet octopus online that she wanted for someone special in her life. But rather than ordering it from somewhere online, she wanted to see if she could find a local maker who could bring the idea to life.

That search brought her to me.

And I was more than happy to see what we could create.

A Different Kind of Octopus

This wasn't the typical cute, round crochet octopus with little curly tentacles.

The inspiration had a much more realistic shape, with a beautifully formed body, flowing tentacles, and beadwork that added another layer of detail and personality.

For the design, I turned to the incredible work of Crafty Intentions, whose patterns are known for their wonderfully detailed and imaginative construction.

The pattern gave me the structure, but the customer's vision gave this particular octopus her personality.

And that vision was pink.

Finding the Right Pink

The vision for this octopus was definitely pink, but we still needed to find the right pink.

After looking at our options, we landed on a beautiful pink ombré yarn from Red Heart. It gave us several shades of pink flowing naturally throughout the piece without having to constantly change colors.

And honestly, it was such a good choice for this pattern.

As the octopus began taking shape, the changing shades moved through the body and those long, beautifully shaped tentacles, giving each section a little something different. The ombré helped highlight all the twists, curves, and details that make the Crafty Intentions design so unique.

Then there was the beadwork.

Adding the beads alongside those changing shades of pink brought even more detail and texture to the finished piece. Between the realistic shaping, flowing tentacles, ombré coloring, and beads, there was so much to look at.

It took what started as “I want it in shades of pink” and turned it into a yarn choice that really seemed made for this project.

Bringing an Online Inspiration Home

One of my favorite parts of this order actually had very little to do with the yarn.

The customer could have simply purchased the octopus she originally found online.

Instead, she made the intentional choice to look within her own community and find a local maker.

As a small handmade business, that means more than people sometimes realize.

When someone comes to me with an inspiration photo, I don't want to simply copy what they found. I want to understand what they loved about it.

Was it the shape?

The colors?

The details?

The feeling it gave them?

From there, we can work together to create something inspired by that original idea while making choices that turn it into a piece with its own story.

For this octopus, it was the beautiful true to life shape, the intricate details, the beadwork, and, of course, all those gorgeous shades of pink.

Handmade for Someone Special

At the end of the day, this wasn't just an octopus.

Someone saw something beautiful and immediately thought of someone they loved.

Then they took the extra step of finding a local maker who could create it especially for them.

That's the part of custom work I never want to lose sight of.

Behind the yarn, beads, stitches, and hours of work, there is almost always a person saying:

“I saw this and thought of you.”

And I get to help turn that thought into something they can actually hold.

That's a pretty special part of what I do.

Have an inspiration photo or an idea you've found online?

You don't have to know the pattern, the exact yarn, or even have every detail figured out. Bring me the idea, tell me what you love about it, and we can explore what it might look like to turn that inspiration into a handmade piece with a story of its own.
