A Little Comfort Through Change: A Blue Rose Shell Turtle

Some custom orders are created to celebrate something.

Some are created simply to bring a little comfort when life feels different.

This sweet turtle was one of those orders.

A mom reached out wanting something special for her daughter, who was facing some changes in her family dynamics. She wanted to give her something soft, comforting, and completely her own to hold onto as she adjusted to everything happening around her.

After some browsing of the site, she landed on a rose shell turtle in beautiful shades of blue.

The turtle itself was already an adorable idea, but the rose shell was what really made this creation stand out.

Instead of a traditional turtle shell, the back was created with layers of crochet that formed the look of a beautiful rose.

It gave the turtle texture.

It gave her something interesting to run her fingers over.

And, of course, it made this little turtle completely unique.

For the colors, we chose different shades of blue, creating a soft palette that flowed throughout the turtle and her beautiful rose shaped shell.

Slowly, the pieces came together.

The body.

The little legs.

The head.

And finally, that gorgeous textured shell.

Children don't always have control over the changes happening around them.

Routines can change.

Homes can feel different.

Family dynamics can shift.

And even when the adults around them are doing everything they can to help, those changes can still feel pretty big to little hearts.

This mom couldn't make every change disappear.

But she could give her daughter something that was hers.

Something soft.

Something made especially for her.

Something she could cuddle when she needed a little extra comfort.

And sometimes those small sources of familiarity can mean a whole lot.

When I looked at the finished turtle, I didn't just see the shades of blue or the beautiful rose shell.

I saw a mom trying to find one more way to remind her daughter that she was loved.

That is something I have learned again and again through custom orders.

The item someone asks me to make is only part of the story.

There is usually a why behind the what.

This customer asked me to make a turtle.

But what she was really asking me to help create was a little source of comfort for her daughter during a season when life was changing.

And that makes this sweet blue turtle mean so much more.

Not every handmade gift needs to mark a birthday, holiday, or celebration.

Sometimes the reason can simply be:

“I thought you could use something to hold onto right now.”

Those may be some of the most meaningful gifts of all.

A little yarn.

A beautiful rose shell.

A few shades of blue.

And a whole lot of love from a mom who wanted her daughter to know that even when things around her change, she is still deeply loved.
