There is something truly special about a custom order where a customer trusts me with creative freedom.
Instead of recreating a specific design or following an exact color chart, I get the opportunity to take a little information about the person receiving the piece and turn it into something completely unique.
This beautiful 6 Day Star Blanket was one of those projects.
Pattern inspiration: 6 Day Star Blanket by Betty McKnit
The request was simple: create a baby blanket for a sweet baby girl. Her parents’ home is decorated in soft tans and off whites, but there was not a specific nursery theme or color palette to follow.
That gave me the perfect starting point.
A little direction.
A lot of creative freedom.
And one of my favorite types of projects to make.
For this blanket, I wanted something that felt cozy, practical, and made to be loved.
I chose a combination of Big Twist and Loops & Threads traditional acrylic yarns because they create a soft, comfortable fabric that can handle everyday life. Baby blankets are meant for cuddles, naps, playtime, and plenty of washing, so I wanted something that was both soft and sturdy.
For the color palette, I started with the warmth of the family’s home in mind.
I chose soft shades of:
Light coral
Light sage
Yellow
Off white
Soft rose

And, because creative freedom means leaving room for the unexpected, a few additional shades found their way into the mix as the blanket grew.
The first color choice was easy.
The light coral simply called to me.
From there, I asked my sweet 7 year old to help choose the color order for the beginning of the blanket. I love involving my kids in my creative process whenever I can, and seeing colors through a child’s eyes often brings a fresh perspective.
After that, I stopped trying to control every detail.
Instead, I let the rows guide me.
As the star grew, I watched how the colors worked together and changed colors when it felt like the blanket was ready for something new.
A touch of heather blue found its way into the design. The purple rows added unexpected texture and personality. The yellow brought the perfect little pop that helped the entire blanket come alive.
Of course, this blanket did not make its way to the finish line without a little adventure.
At one point, I discovered a mistake three rows back.
Anyone who crochets knows that moment. You stare at your work, something feels off, and suddenly you realize you have a decision to make.
Keep going and hope no one notices?
Or grab the hook and go backward?
The answer was easy.
I frogged those rows, fixed the mistake, and kept going.
Because handmade means taking the time to make it right.

On September 17th, this beautiful star was officially complete.
And I have to say...
She turned out pretty dashing.
What began as a simple request for a baby girl blanket became a one of a kind piece filled with thoughtful choices, family involvement, unexpected color moments, and a whole lot of love stitched into every row.
That is my favorite part about custom orders.
You are not just receiving something handmade.
You are receiving a piece that was created specifically with you in mind.
If you have an idea for a special blanket, comfort companion, or handmade gift, I would love to help bring your vision to life.
